RCC Roof Slab Material Calculation: Cement, Sand, Aggregate and Steel

Before a slab pour you need every material on site at once. Here is how to calculate exactly what to order, with a worked example.

Quick answer

To estimate an RCC slab, multiply slab area by thickness for concrete volume, then apply mix quantities. Example: a 20 ft × 15 ft (300 sq ft) slab, 125 mm thick, is about 3.5 m³ of concrete. In M20 nominal mix that needs about 28 bags of cement, 1.5 m³ (52 cft) of sand, 2.9 m³ (103 cft) of 20 mm aggregate, roughly 250–350 kg of steel and about 700 litres of mixing water.

Step 1: Concrete volume

Volume = length × width × thickness

Example: 20 ft × 15 ft slab, 5 inches (≈125 mm) thick.

  • Area = 300 sq ft = 27.87 m²
  • Volume = 27.87 × 0.125 = 3.48 m³ (≈ 123 cft)

Add any beams cast monolithically with the slab (beam depth below the slab × width × length).

Step 2: Cement, sand and aggregate (M20, 1:1.5:3)

Using the dry-volume method from cement bags per cubic metre:

MaterialPer m³For 3.48 m³
Cement8.06 bags~28 bags
Sand0.42 m³~1.46 m³ (≈ 52 cft)
20 mm aggregate0.84 m³~2.92 m³ (≈ 103 cft)

Add 3–5% for wastage. For this slab, have 30 bags on site.

Step 3: Steel

Steel depends on the structural design — span, loads and support conditions. For early estimation, residential slabs commonly use about 70–100 kg of steel per m³ of slab concrete:

  • 3.48 m³ × 80 kg ≈ 280 kg (about 250–350 kg range)

Always order steel from the bar bending schedule (BBS) prepared from the structural drawing, not a thumb rule. The weight of each bar size is d²/162 kg per metre — see TMT weight formula.

Step 4: Water

At a water-cement ratio of 0.5:

  • Cement = 28 bags × 50 kg = 1,400 kg
  • Water ≈ 1,400 × 0.5 = 700 litres for mixing

Plan separately for curing water — a slab under ponding needs far more over 10–14 days.

Step 5: Shuttering and props

  • Shuttering area ≈ slab soffit area + edge formwork = about 28 m² + edges
  • Props at the spacing your engineer specifies

Pour-day checklist

  • All cement, sand, aggregate and water stocked before you start — a slab should be poured in one continuous operation.
  • Mixer and vibrator plus a standby.
  • Cover blocks fixed, steel checked and approved.
  • Cube moulds ready for samples.
  • Curing material and water arranged.

Our full roof slab concreting checklist covers each step.

Ready-mix or site mix?

For slabs larger than about 15–20 m³, or where quality control is difficult, compare ready-mix vs site-mixed concrete.

Key takeaways

  • 300 sq ft × 5-inch slab ≈ 3.5 m³ of concrete.
  • M20 needs about 28 bags of cement plus wastage.
  • Order steel from the BBS; use thumb rules only for budgets.
  • Stock everything before starting the pour.

Frequently asked questions

How many cement bags are needed for a 1000 sq ft slab?

A 1000 sq ft slab at 5 inches (125 mm) is about 11.6 m³. In M20 nominal mix that needs roughly 94 bags of cement, plus 3–5% wastage.

What is the standard thickness of a roof slab?

Residential roof slabs are commonly 100–150 mm (4–6 inches) thick, but the actual thickness comes from the structural design based on span and loads.

How much steel is used in a slab?

Residential slabs often use about 70–100 kg of steel per cubic metre of concrete, but the exact quantity must come from the bar bending schedule.

Which cement is best for a roof slab?

PPC or OPC 43 are common choices for residential slabs. Follow your engineer's specification and cure the slab properly.
